Tips for Great Dancing at Your Event | Sound Wave Events | Boise DJ

One of the questions we get most is how to have great dancing at weddings and events. We love when an event builds up to an amazing party on the dance floor, where everyone celebrates and makes unforgettable memories. We love to talk with our clients about how to create a great atmosphere for dancing – with or without alcohol!

Over the years we have developed a "formula" for great dancing.  We feel there are 6 keys to a successful dance floor:

1. Great Music!  It is probably no surprise that a great mix of music can create a great dance floor!  Consider also that it isn't just what songs are played but also what order they are played in and having a mix that fits well with the guests at your event. This is where a professional DJ can be a huge help, especially if he takes requests, reads the crowd and “mixes” music eliminating gaps or pauses between the songs!
2. Time of Day Matters!  We have found that the later it gets, particularly the darker it gets, the more comfortable people are to dance and get weird! People seem think no one can see them being crazy on the dance floor when it is dark outside!  If your event is in an indoor space, you can sometimes make it feel like it is later than it actually is with lighting, covering windows, etc.  If you are outdoors, consider getting creative with your timeline or having an evening event to maximize your dancing time. Curious about your sunset time?  Look it up!

3. Guests of Honor Are Dancing! Guaranteed, your guests want to be wherever your guest of honor is! If they are mingling, they will also mingle. And if the guest of honor is dancing, they WILL DANCE! So get out there and bust a move!

4. Your Group Likes to Dance! If guests like to dance - they are going to dance!  When we are DJing our goal is to keep the dance floor full without calling people out or making them feel uncomfortable - we want it to be natural.  It always helps when the group is excited about dancing!

5. Your Dance Floor is the Center of Attention!  Many clients feel like their dance floor needs to be in the middle of the event space to be the center of attention.  This isn't always the case.  In our experience we have found that you can make your dance floor the center of attention by first having a good flow in your layout - keep your dance floor, DJ, bar, and photo booth close to each other so after dinner everyone naturally moves toward the dance floor and isn’t taken away from the dance floor for a drink refill or to enjoy other activities.  This makes for a fun party “area” that people can enjoy all night.  Looking for dance floor ideas? Check out our options!

6. Lighting Sets the Mood! Ambient lighting creates an atmosphere and vibe that sets the tone for your party. Consider uplighting, bistro lighting or a dance floor wash to match your vision and bring your party to life.  You can see many photos on our website!

So, do you have to have all of these keys perfectly in place to have great dancing at your event?  Of course not!  We feel like having 3 or 4 out of 6 will be your recipe for success.  Let us know if you have any questions or want to chat more about creating an unforgettable dance party at your event!

Great ideas! This is particularly why we chose to have our ceremony start at 7pm (sunset is 7:25 that evening) and won’t be serving dinner but finger foods instead! We wanted to set a party atmosphere! Dancing will be 9:30-Midnight! A much more realistic time to dance especially because it will be dark out and indoors
