This is one we've all heard, but never really knew why we just do it. What do these things mean?! How did they start? Let's check out the four...er, five, wedding day wearables that make you go "huh?" Something Old - This one is pretty sweet, actually. This is usually something given to the bride to connect her to her life before marriage, and some say it is for the family to provide protection to future children. It could be something simple such as a locket photo of her parents on their wedding day. Or it could be something so special and meaningful, like the bride wearing her mother's or grandmother's wedding gown, veil, or a headpiece (think tiara or comb). Either way, it's to remind the bride of where she came from, and to keep her connected to her family throughout her marriage. Something New - This one should be pretty obvious after reading Something Old. This is to bring luck or prosperity to the new couple, wishing them a happy life together. It could be a symbol of love or luck, such as a horseshoe or heart pendant, or maybe her veil or even her wedding gown to pass down through future generations. Something Borrowed - This is something that is given to the bride temporarily as a symbol of the lender's love and well wishes for the couple. Maybe a bracelet, necklace, or earrings, perhaps. Something Blue - Blue is a symbol of purity, prosperity, and fidelity. For obvious reasons, blue is a great color to wear on one of the biggest days of your life! Maybe a blue garter, lingerie, a handkerchief, or shoes! And speaking of shoes....the fifth portion of this old Victorian rhyme seems to have been just left off over the past several years... A Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe - First of all...what the heck is a sixpence? According to Wikipedia, it's a British coin, worth 1/6 of a sterling pound. Without getting into all of the currency things associated, we'll just say that a sixpence was traditionally placed in the bride's shoe by her father, or other well wisher, in a gesture to wish the new couple prosperity, happiness, and good fortune in their marriage. So these days, a silver sixpence may be quite hard to come by, so brides may choose to use a coin of their choosing...a silver dollar, half dollar, or quarter maybe. Some even just go with a simple penny or dime to fulfill this part of the song. So there ya have it - Another tradition explained! This one is definitely fun to gather all of the items, and see how every bride's personality shines through each piece.
